Semiconductor skills gap continues to grow

Semiconductor skills gap continues to grow.

Yet teams are becoming stretched thin. What is lacking?

Over time the design companies learnt how to capture the experience of their senior engineers, and effectively making that available to more junior engineers.

I think design companies have lots of internal data, lots of experts, lots of experience.

They are capturing this and using it on top of the LLMs to provide the missing knowledge to AI.

What is LLM?

LLM or Large Language Model is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that can understand human language and generate.

Anyone working with LLMs knows it is a garbage in, garbage out problem.

Now, what they lack?

They lack domain specific knowledge about semiconductor design.

We have to invest time in creating and cleaning data. We can’t build anything without good data.

I think the simplistic approach is, analysing regressions, logs, reports, so we can extract or parse out problems that we’ve seen.

We also have access to documentation that talks about the error message, bug reports that engineers have seen before.

Then we can combine the two and work in a loop, iterate using AI agents until we have been able to solve the problem.
